Finally. After 131 years, they got it right. Uno, a 3 year old, 15 inch tri-colored package of personality was picked best in show at the 132nd Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Even though he may be more of a show dog than a rabbit chaser...."Don't expect Uno to get his paws dirty and act like a typical hunting beagle. He has no interest in chasing deer or rabbits. The only prey he's interested is his little yellow rubber ducky, his favorite toy. "He doesn't put his nose straight down and go to the woods," says Wilkerson. "He's a show dog. If you put him near the woods, he'd come right back to me as if to say, 'You want me to walk in there?' "
I'm not sure I believe that. Maybe he's lived the soft dog-show life, but if he's a beagle, he has to have a nose for tracking. He probably dreams of chasing hares when he gets done with the dog show circuit. What self-respecting beagle would rather walk around an arena on a leash and get probed by judges instead of diggin after a squirrel? You know if he came across some fish guts he would roll around in them.
I think he would jump right into the swamp if you just gave him a chance.
Even so, it's nice to see a beagle howl on the winners stand for once.
